A friend of mine (I’ll call him Hasty) approached me the other day with an idea. Normally, when a person approaches me within the trusted boundaries of a friendship I openly receive the idea for consideration. This friend happened to be my pastor, so the words about tumble out of his mouth made me nervous. Do you think that has anything to do with pastors historically approaching parishioners with “ideas” that involve serving in a needed area of church ministry? The idea, as it turned out involved running.
Yes, running. Hasty invited me to participate in a 5k run with him. I’m 60 years old and the idea of running…let me phrase it differently. The idea embarrassing myself in an alumni “fun run” this fall prevented me from immediately and resoundingly saying, “Yes, let’s do it.” Instead, I asked for some time to think it over.
