Rust

car-wreck-3183452_960_720I’m guilty of not washing my car as often as I should.  Maybe it’s because I regard vehicles as transportation and not a stylish reflection of who I am.  In the northeastern United States we use salt on the roads in the winter.  So, after ten to twelve years of ownership, my cars invariably show signs of rust.  At this point it’s a little late in the game to be putting more effort into washing my car.

I want to be one of those people who invests their time and energy into imperishable things like relationships.  I know this will require regular housecleaning to keep my heart from forming rust-bearing thoughts that can corrode the relationships I hold dear.

“Store your treasure in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not bread in and steal.  Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”  Matthew 6:20-21 NLT

Joshua 8: Seek God first

cross-2981216__340Once the issue of Achan’s thievery is dealt with, God turns from his fierce anger and promises victory over Ai. He instructs Joshua to take the whole army into battle, which included setting up an ambush.

When the victory over Ai is secured, Joshua sets up an altar to God. The word of God is read to the people of Israel and they rededicate themselves to God. Serving and obeying God became more importance than success on the battlefield.

Centuries later Jesus offered these words,

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33 NLT

Your coffee mug verse: Philippians 1:21

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” Philippians 1:21

The world’s definition of living is rooted in how we engage our physical surroundings.  In our quest to live we strive to possess things and people of interest.  Yet, all the things we hold on to of worldly value are perishable; people, food, possessions, wealth, fame.  In Philippians 1:21 the apostle Paul is referring to true life found in a relationship with Jesus Christ; true life that begins now and lasts for all eternity.

Paul explains his dilemma:

“I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me.  But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live.” Phil. 1:23-24 NLT

Believer, are you “striving together [with others] as one for the faith of the gospel?” (v27)
